5 Transport Trends We Are Predicting For 2023

The global transport industry is literally a fast-moving train, with brilliant innovations emerging at the speed of light. The local transport industry in Nigeria is not living up to the global growth rate. Still, it is also not moving at a snail’s pace either, being one of the fastest-growing industries in Nigeria and with the private sector taking the lead in driving its evolution.

We can all agree that this year is a make-or-break one for all sectors in Nigeria, as we are on the cusp of political change. All factors considered, we are predicting these five trends for the transport sector in Nigeria for the year 2023.

More tech infusion into traditional transport systems

It has been an ongoing trend for the past couple of years, and we expect more of this in 2023 as stakeholders awaken to the inadequacies of traditional transport systems. So brace yourself for more apps that let you access popular public transport options and even cashless payment modes. Rejoice! It could mean your days of brawling with public bus conductors are over.

More private x public sector collaboration

For the past ten years, the private sector has been at the forefront of driving innovation in the Nigerian transport industry, with the government’s support at different geopolitical levels. This year, we are predicting a shift in this trend, with the public sector taking the lead to drive collaborations with the private sector.

Increased focus on sustainability

Nigeria still struggles with the transition to environmentally sustainable mobility infrastructure. We believe it is not a far reach to expect Electric Vehicles (EVs) for public transportation in 2023, and we are actually at the forefront of trying to make this happen. EVs make up a good percentage of new cars purchased in more innovative climes. For instance, in the United Kingdom, 22.9% of new vehicles purchased in 2022 are EVs. We believe this is less than 0.5% in Nigeria. We also foresee that more residents of metropolitan cities in Nigeria will fully adopt bus-sharing services (like what we offer at Shuttlers) instead of putting their private vehicles on the highways daily, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions.

New government policies

Anyone who lives and conducts business in Nigeria knows to expect this, as it comes naturally with a change in government. We predict some policy changes that will reshape the transportation industry, and we are optimistic that they will be for the better.

Smart mobility: Multi-modal diversification

The Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) announced a collaboration to create a more adaptable multi-modal transportation system. The goal is to give Lagos State residents inexpensive, safe, dependable, comfortable, efficient, and environmentally friendly options. We saw this coming! This year, many modes of transport will synergise to offer commuters an ultimately seamless end-to-end transportation experience.

We take pride in setting meaningful trends at Shuttlers, and you can expect that we will not only partake in the shifts that will happen this year but will also actively influence and shape them. So, watch out!
